Unscrupulous shop owners trying to sell food that is past its best could be undone by a new design of packaging.
Proposed by Japanese outfit TO-GENKYO, the Fresh Label visibly changes to indicate how fresh the food is.
It detects the levels of ammonia being emitted by the food. As food ages, ammonia levels increase and the label will change colour to reflect this. It will eventually become so dark that the label's barcode becomes unreadable, preventing it from being sold once it has reached its use-by date.
This is one of the entries for the Good Design Awards. Spoon & Tamago are previewing the awards, picking the best of the entries each week.
